Alaska Census Records

Census records provide the information needed for you to trace your ancestors as they moved from one place to another. My carefully looking at the neighbors you can often find other family members living close together. A census search is one of the most important things you will do in your family research.

Census records for Alaska prior to 1900 no longer exist.

  Information

Census information exists for the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. Unfortunately, earlier census enumerations (1880-1890) did not survive.

Ronald Vern Jackson wrote a book in 1976 (currently out of print) that went into depth about the Alaska State census 1870-1907. The information from this book which will prove invaluable to Alaskan researchers can be found online at Ancestry. I have not found any of this information online for free yet. Alaska Census 1870-1907 (must have Ancestry membership to view information, but search is free).

The scope of the collection includes colonial records (pre-1790 tax lists, resident's lists, etc.) and censuses from 1790 to 1870. (Requires Ancestry.com Membership)

Ancestry.com Census Records - Free Search
Early censuses were essentially basic counts of inhabitants, but as the nation grew so did the need for statistics that would reflect the characteristics of the people. Few, if any, records reveal as many details about individuals and families as do the U.S. federal censuses. The same can also be true of census records taken at the state level and in foreign countries (Requires Ancestry.com Membership)
